Norfolk Botanical Garden
Norfolk city, VA
Obs. made from 9:45 to 5:40. Partly sunny to mostly sunny, 73-80 degrees. Butterfly garden attracted a decent variety, but much of the nectar was poorer than normal. Most notable was the lack of Lantana in bloom. The large drifts of Zinnias attracted the greatest number of butterflies this day. Observed both Great Southern White & Zebra Heliconian but they most likely had escaped from the enclosed butterfly house. Two dark morph E.tiger females observed.

Tony Knowles Coastal Trail north of Westchester Lagoon
Anchorage Municipality, AK
Finding butterflies in much of Alaska during peak months of June and July can be challenging sometimes, but by September it feels like an act of futile desperation. After three hours of butterflying for late species at several locations (Baxter Bog, the Coastal Trail, and Campbell Creek Estuary), I managed to find just a single Mourning Cloak. It was well worth it, though, for this cooperative butterfly. The half dozen Mourning Cloaks I’ve seen during the past few weeks have been very skittish. At first this one flew up high along trees that border the trail before finally circling and settling on a cottonwood branch and then on a strip of sunlit wood. I was very happy for an opportunity for late season butterfly photos.

Surveyed from 7:30 to 11:45 when rain sent me home. Most butterfly activity didn’t start until about 9:30 am. Fall flowers are yet to come and are usually better at this spot from mid-Oct to mid-Nov. Some spots do look promising. West Loop is the spot now for Arogos Skipper, with the population climbing perhaps one or two more weeks. Look for areas on the west side of the drive that have patches of Rayless Sunflower. Get there early if you want dorsal shots, they rarely present. Hunting starts 9-18 with Archery kicking off the fall season. A good time was had by me! EP

Clouded Skippers were observed over a wide area (wherever I stopped), so the count is probably low.

We had our first real frost of the season this morning and the mountain peaks have been dusted with snow for a couple of weeks now, so I wasn’t expecting butterflies. At about 12:30pm with temperatures approaching 50° we took a walk in an area that in late winter can be good for owls. As I left the car a northern goshawk flew down the road. While watching the hawk I was surprised to see a Mourning Cloak flutter high across the road in the bright autumn sun. More Mourning Cloaks appeared along bushes beside a field of tall grass, and we then found the thistle where a beautiful Milbert’s Tortoiseshell was nectaring.

- Mostly sunny- mostly cloudy, 79-82 degrees.
Notes: The Harvester was a unusually large female. Twice as large as the harvesters seen previously. She was laying eggs on Wooly Aphids. The Spicebush Swallowtail was hugging the forest edge. I was surprised at the lack of Spicebush Swallowtails considering how many we saw a month ago.
Excited to finally see one or more Cloudless Sulphurs. I wanted to get close but both were flying full speed ahead.
Many of the Silver Spotted Skippers were caterpillars hiding in their leaf shelter.
I am still trying to find a Goatweed Leafwing at this location, but no luck yet!
We also saved a poor Eastern Comma that was stunned from getting grazed by a car. It seems to be recovering.

Spent most of the time looking for marsh skippers. Surprised to see no Salt Marsh or Ocola Skippers.

Great day in the gardens in spite of wind which kept most butterflies lower to the ground.. Started the day with some small Monarch roosts in the cherry Tree. (Est Count 30) Some of the Monarchs left through the day. Brazilian Skipper popped up again today nectaring on sage as did the Long-tailed Skipper. Ocola Skipper’s have now also exploded with a count of 11 in the backyard at the same time and 4 of them on one lantana at the same time. I don’t know that I have ever had double digit Ocola skippers here. The Pipevine Swallowtail also returned and a Northern Broken-dash stopped by for the first time in weeks which was another surprise. Low estimate of Sachems.

Sunny, temps at 95 or higher, humid. Visited the LRGV Sept 24-28. Lack of rain combined with freeze last spring has slowed activity for now.

Two views of identical Dotted Skipper. (Also observed a female with my butterfly bins at close distance, but blew a chance at a photo.)
