Our enthusiasm at seeing our first Ocola Skipper in the northeastern U.S. was tempered with the knowledge that Rich Kelly had passed away yesterday. Rich, a frequent contributor to this site, had such mind-boggling extensive knowledge in several fields of the natural sciences, including butterflies, moths, odonates, birds, botany, and sea shells! A mentor to many, he will be sorely missed.
Today’s sightings were made between 2:00 - 3:00 PM. Mostly sunny, mid-70s, with a strong breeze from the NW.

Some clouds, but temperature of 77 this afternoon. Saw a Monarch near garden # 2490. Two Monarchs came out of chrysalis today. One in the morning, another in evening. I gave a 92yr old woman the honor to hold the Monarch whose wings were dried by evening. This Monarch stayed with her for 15 minutes before flying away. It brought her great joy and fascination as it was the first time ever for her to hold one and see the other one emerge!

Surveyed the shorter loop from West Loop, to Crossroad, then back around to East Loop, including Cemetery Road on the way out; not a whole lot going on today, very slow though we managed 29 species, the numbers were low and the morning almost seemed like a ghost town. Major nectar was Rose Rush, Bidens alba, and some Carolina Redroot. 9a to 1 pm, EPerry & RWarner; a good time was had by all.

A wonderful day in the yard. Amazing to see the Giant Swallowtail after being seen by visitors to the yard on 9/8. This was a first sighting in my yard of the GS. Return of the Long-tailed Skipper but without pictures because of the GS. Over 115 Common Buckeyes in the yard when I stopped counting. 24 of them just on one patch of sedum. Today’s special visitors included 3 Long-tailed Skippers and a probable 4th LTS. 3 were seen in the backyard and one in the front yard. I have pictures of all of them which definitely show the 3 different skippers.
whereas the front one could have come around to the back. Seen all between 9:30 AM and 11 AM. Many visitors shown around the gardens. Fiery skippers and Sachems are low estimates. Caterpillars and chrysalis of several species continue.

Surveyed 9a to 3:30p. Hot, sunny, dry. Main nectar was Pickerelweed. Some Liatris is starting up and will be stronger in another week or so, also lots of pine lily, swamp sunflower, Bidens alba, and Elephant foot (which opens its flowers later in the day), with lesser amounts of Frostweed, bull thistle, carpetweed, and mistflower. Road shoulder mowing was happening this day but there is still lots for the butterflies. EPerry & RWarner. A good time was had by all.

Just off I-95 on Charlie Butler Rd. This is a Freshwater Tidal Swamp. It sometimes has mocassins on the boardwalk! There is Giant Cane along the boardwalk, pickerel weed & other native plants blooming including Sea Mallow. We targeted the Creole Pearly-eye documented here in the meadow previously.

Surveyed 9 am to 3 pm. Hunting season (archery currently) is open; most hunters are shutting down for the day by about 9:00-10a and getting back out in early afternoon around 3-4p, so butterfly surveys don’t bother the hunters so much and we stay on road shoulders for the most part anyway. Main nectar is pickerelweed, Bidens, Carphephorus spp., Liatris, and various sunflowers—mainly rayless. To reach the only patch of Liatris this season, go on Loop West, and once you get to Crossroad, stay on Loop West for another .7 mile, on the left (inside of loop). We found Berry’s there and at a later check in the afternoon several dotted & palmetto came out to nectar. Sunny, hot, dry; a good time was had by all! EPerry & RWarner (and nice to run into the Salvatos!)

Red-spotted Purple caterpillar amazing to see. Should go into chrysalis soon. Lots of continuing caterpillars and chrysalis of 5-6 species. 90 minutes, high 70s, breezy. Ocola Skipper was at the exact spot i saw the Long-tailed Skipper about 10 days ago- purple salvia opposite 9/11 memorial. It came by twice from around 3-3:40 PM. American Coppers were on goldenrod at the east end of the “Wild play’ area, buckeyes were everywhere.
American Coppers were more numerous on goldenrods in the dunes at the west end of the park, which were visited earlier in the PM- typical this time of year.
