Eight Dollar Road and the high ridges above the Illinois River
Josephine County, OR
Cathy and I worked the high Ridges above the Illinois River for a second time to see how the fritillary numbers were changing. Zerene Fritillary numbers are clinbing and Coronis are decreasing. This is the most Zerene Fritillaries we’ve seen since moving to Southern Oregon. Seeing a Western Cloudywing was a treat. The usual spot is one ridge west of this locale, so seeing one here shows that there may be others in the vicinity.

Dozens of tiny skippers! I wanted to say Mulberry Wing, but not quite the airplane shape on the lower wings, & difficult to see the upper wings. Also, too far northeast from normal range. But, didn’t seem to fit Peck’s or Hobomok either. Also, Habrosyne gloriosa moth at visitors’ rest area. Mostly sunny, temperatures above 80.

Caribou town site, 8 miles west of Nederland
Boulder County, CO
The elevation of caribou town site is 10,000 feet. It is now a large open meadow with a riot of flowers, a tiny stream going through the middle of it, forested around the edges. it was often sunny today with of clouds building. 10AM to 1:00 pm 75 F
In its hey day, Caribou had been a silver mining town. There are two old stone foundations remaining but mostly there is no sign of a town.

10:30 - 3:00, with David Rawlinson and Nancy Asquith part of the time. Very warm, in the 80’s. Highlight for me was seeing hundreds upon hundreds of Golden Hairstreaks (last year I saw only two). The Hairstreaks were perched on low shaded vegetation and in the trail, take two steps and a dozen would fly up.

Had two uncommon visitors today. A pair of Meadow Fritillaries spent some time on our oregano blooms. But my best sighting was a male Diana Fritillary - only the third time in nearly 40 years that I’ve seen a male Diana in our yard. I’ve only seen a female Diana once a few years ago.

Nice, fresh Red Admirals. A couple landed on me. It always occurs to me that we take Red Admirals for granted. Were these butterflies much rarer, we’d travel hundreds of miles to see them!
No Swallowtails nor Sulphurs; perhaps between broods.
Catalpa Sphinx moth at preserve headquarters. No great shock; a gigantic, old Catalpa tree nearby.

Simius roadside-skipper is east of its typical range, and it was a surprise. Very low butterfly count today could be due to an unusual abundance of large dragonflies. My last five counts here produced at least 28 species of butterflies, but not today.

My wife and I butterflied Mt. Ashland today. Wildflowers are at their peak and we saw lots of butterflies. There are still a few patches of snow in the shadows in the high peaks, which is probably going to make the wildflower show last a few more weeks. Seeing a Pine White this early is unusual, I think.

Red-banded Hairstreak found perched on wall - alongside many moths - at 7:30 a.m.
As I’ve noted before, Red-banded Hairstreaks seem more inclined to perch on a wall with lights overnight than most other butterflies!
Silver-spotted Skipper was at the base of one of the walls, dead.
Probably more giant Silkworm moths at one time than I’ve ever seen at one place: Many Imperials here - and at one other location near Northeast - over this, and the previous, weekend. Also, a dozen Lunas, and one Polyphemus. Plus, the smaller Rosy Maple Moths.
One huge Sphinx moth far above; I could not get it to come down to ID. Azalea Sphinx & Pandorus Sphinx.
Also, Banded (or Harnessed) Tiger Moths; Giant Leopard Moths; Heterocampa species; Emerald species; One-spotted Variants; Skiff moths; Ailanthus Webworm Moths; and various micros

Along marsh along Dutch Neck Road - primarily just south of the "red barn" -- south of the C & D Canal, south of Delaware City
New Castle County, DE
Nearly 2-hour walk, midday. Beautiful day, mostly sunny.
Impressive numbers of Silver-spotted Skippers and Broad-winged Skippers, as far as one could see, over the marsh.
Love that part of the season when both Monarchs and Swallowtails are flying in good numbers.
Bronze Coppers which opened wings all appeared to be males.
Actually, my first Cloudless Sulphur of the year!
Surprising: Not seeing Red-spotted Purples or Viceroys this year. Normally see Viceroys in this habitat.

mostly we walked along the dirt road. there are little side meadows that we walked through as well. there were many painted ladies and small wood nymphs but only singles of most species. we had sun most of the time, and it was 68F. big thunder heads sent the butterflies down and us home.
last august i found a two tailed swallowtail caterpillar in a meadow on this road. i raised the butterfly, overwintering the chrysalis. i released him in that meadow a few weeks back. today we saw, in that exact meadow, a male two tailed swallowtail. i like to think that this was the one i released.

North Cape May ~ my yard NABA #1151 & Mo
Our family farm. The Painted Lady made 22 species seen on the property to date. Began tracking this season. Heavy rains (7 inches over 2 days) made lots of good puddling and we planted two new butterfly bushes which immediately began attracting butterflies. Purple coneflowers really coming on in the garden. Wild nectar sources included black-eyed susan, common milkweed, daisy fleabane and various other wild prairie sunflower/coreopsis varieties.
