One-and-a-half-hour walk, late afternoon.
Above 70 degrees, but a little breezy.
My first Falcate Orangetip of the year. Surprised not to see any Cabbage Whites, but did see one earlier in the day along Route 273 by the Route One overpass, Bear, Delaware.
The Eastern Comma was quite worn, presuming an individual which overwintered.

Area was very dry. Nectar sources were purple thistle, Nuttall’s thistle, daisy fleabane, and sweet clover. Like an oasis in a desert, some purple thistles had as many as six species of butterflies on a single bloom! Weather was warm, sunny and dry. Only surveyed the road shoulders as turkey hunting was still in season until 1 pm this day. Most nectar sources were in ditch along road shoulders.

Very dry. Nectar sources that were around last week are quickly disappearing. Purple thistle is almost spent, though some plants are managing a few new buds, which are oases in a parched land! Other nectar sources were a very few Nuttall’s thistle, daisy fleabane, southern guara, and sweet clover. There is some Coreopsis but very few butterflies are using it. Clear, sunny, then breezy. Surveyed from 9:40 am to 1:40. EPerry and RWarner.

Came home to find this Eastern Tailed-Blue laying eggs on the Clover in my front yard. Only found saw her lay two eggs, but I will attempt to raise them. The “grass” will be cut very soon and they would not have made it. I used a hand-held 100× magnifying glass to locate and then photograph the eggs. The last picture of the Clover flower is not magnified to show the egg at actual scale.

Mercer County Park; Power Lines near Lake
Mercer County, NJ
The weather was sunny with a constant breeze and about 80º F at 4:30 pm when I arrived. The eastern side of the power lines had adequate sun for butterflies, but the western side was already in the shade. The ground was somewhat damp from recent rains, but not muddy. There was an abundance of flowering garlic mustard, which is a favorite nectar source for the particular population of Falcate Orangetips that frequent this area, though their host plant in this area is Hairy Rock Cress. This population has proven to be fairly stable over the past decade that I have been observing them. The coincidence of Garlic mustard in bloom increases the number of sightings (especially of males), as there are more instances of nectaring. The Garlic mustard bloomed after the peak of the Falcate Orangetips for the past two years here, which might help to explain fewer sightings in this particular population.

Another trip to check on the Falcate Orangetip population in this unit of Mercer County Park. The weather was sunny and 83º F with a slight, steady breeze between 5 & 10 mph. I arrived at 2 pm and there was sunlight along the entire area of the power lines. There were butterflies in large numbers (for this area) and also a decent number of species observed. The trip lasted about 1½ hours (2-3:30 pm).

Very, very dry. Nectar sources however persist, mainly in the form of Nuttall’s thistle and purple thistle. Also being used is daisy fleabane, pickerel weed (in dried up ditch along Power Line Road), and some Coreopsis. Entrance road, Power Line Road, and Fish Hole Road all best areas for Lep activity.
