9:30 to noon, temps starting in low 80s, low to mid 90s by noon; starting around 11:30 butterflies were seeking shade and becoming lethargic (same for butterfliers)
despite a four hairstreak day, we could not turn up any banded hairstreaks. And despite ample milkweed, no monarchs.

2 hours. this large open meadow has slowly degraded over the years but today’s results represent something of a rebound; we don’t know if there had been any actual county management to reduce the progressive influx of woody vegetation.
about half the coral hairstreak sightings were on leaves and vegetation; the other half were on the abundant orange milkweed (a lot more of that present vs my prior visits).

Turns out one of the “Cloudless Sulphur” cats I found in the campus senna patch is actually a rare Orange-barred Sulphur stray! I usually find cats when they are too small to distinguish species (predators get them soon after that stage otherwise) so it took a week or so to realize I had a new species in my care. He’s about 5th instar now—well, I can’t ID gender yet since the black spikes obscure my view of the “family jewels,” which I can often see on cloudless and other 5th instar sulphur cats ;)

Overall, this visit to Gaspe Peninsula at mid-week was rather disappointing, butterfly-wise, as it was either overcast, or scorching sun with winds.
Blackish swallowtails flew far above, impossible to identify to species, let alone subspecies. Also, yellow swallowtails, assumed to be Canadian Tiger Swallowtails.
Common Ringlet was the form without the eyespot(s).
Many great moths, though. A highlight for me, further east, in Gaspe’: The spectacular St. Lawrence Tiger Moth.

Somerville, back rds. & preserve lands
Lincoln County, ME
Warm & sunny after a briefly cool & damp spell; a few new spp. seem to be emerging locally, but still no “summer” satyrs seen; & in general no’s. of most common species, as well as variety of b’flies, seem a bit paltry. Common Milkweed is abundantly blooming yet so far not attracting a lot, however my efforts have been less than all-out. A Canadian Tiger in faded but fairly good shape is a bit late now; Clouded Sulphurs just starting to show well; a Harris’s Checkerspot is just slightly late at this location. Most fritillaries seem low, skippers indeterminate, other than ever-numerous earlier-season Euro. Skipper hereabouts. Several hours in just casual observing today.

Sunny & warm after a soaking shower, more b’flies emerging, & more nectar sources in bloom. Good comparisons for Aphrodite & Atlantis Fritillaries, nearly side-by-side. N.Pearly-eye just out, whereas Eyed Browns actually were out at least since the Fourth here. No Common Wood-Nymphs noted yet, however. Skippers in diminished no’s. generally. Warmest day of summer so far, to 90+ F. & humid. E. Tiger seems v. uncommon around here, but is occasional in summer. First Or. Skippers fading, but some summer skippers not yet noted, although poss. present in the area. S.-b. Fritillary worryingly low so far this year, still hoping to find more. West Irondequoit, my garden, abutting Seneca Park, above the Genesee River Gorge
Monroe County, NY
I was weeding a row of Butterfly Bushes that had only one in bloom and saw it fly along the row and alight on a grapevine leaf in the sun. When I went to inspect it, it flew to a low branch on a pine tree in the shade and spread its wings fully and stayed that way for over 40 minutes. It was observable at eye level upper side and under side. It was HUGE; I estimate wingspan closer to 8” than 6”! Garden had in bloom many Hostas, Crocosomia “Lucifer”, re-blooming day-lilies, lilies, some scarlet lobelia, butterfly plants, butterfly bush, Corydalis “lutea”, swamp milkweed (I think), Black-eyed Susan, wild geranium, hydrangeas; lace-cap and mop-head. I did not see the Giant Swallowtail feed on anything in the garden nor do I know how long he stayed at the pine tree; over 40 minutes though. There are 6 pinch-waist hummingbird feeders in the garden. I have never seen anything quite like it; an awesome experience !

South end off the county today. This area is in USDA growth zone 9a. The previous posts from, the north part of the county is in USDA zone 8a, and the center of the county is in USDA zone 8b. These areas provides the proper climate for wide range of host plants making this home for butterflies that we might see from central Florida to central Alabama. The zones 9b and 8b are on the cusp of each of these zones.and Baldwin Co.does not get the full time range of all the speices found deeper in both zones. The cooler months has more of the zone 8b sighting(mostly late winter and early spring);and the warmer months(mid summer through the fall)produces most of the sightins from zone 9a residents. The weather remains warm enough for Monarchs to over winter here in the southern coastal area of zone 9a,as they do in Florida. Today’s sighting of a female Orange Barred Sulphur, and Baracoa Skipper are examples of those that might be more of a Floridian sightings.

I spent three days in the Cloud Peak Wilderness hiking in on the Tensleep Trail on the first day (July 25th), hiking to the summit of Cloud peak on the second day (26), and then hiking out on the third day (27). This is a list of all that I saw over those three days in the variety of habitat from the trailhead at the Tensleep Campground to the summit of Cloud Peak and back. Antelope Island (The Ranch)

Went after work today to survey the damage from a large week-end wildfire that burned over 1/2 the island - 15,100 acres of 28,000 acres.
From what I can tell for the trails I walk, the White Rock Trail is intact. But the Sentry Peak trail is totally burned.
The Ranch is OK too! The butterflies were at the Ranch.
