Corps of Engineers section of Clermont County NABA count circle. Also seen was a California Tortoiseshell. This butterfly was seen well using close focus binoculars. The ventral was dark like a mourning cloak without the light edging, no silver mark and the butterfly was a little too small. The dorsal was mostly orange. I recognized the butterfly as a tortoiseshell. I studied the leading edge of the forewing looking for cat’s eyes, which were absent. Instead, the leading edge had two round black spots, a black bar, and small white spot near the apex. Although I did not get a picture, I am 100% certain of the ID. Likely a state record, but without photo documentation probably can’t be accepted.
