Sighting for July 24, 2022

Brian McGurgan

Chugach State Park, Flattop Mountain (61.10299° N, 149.68182° W)
Anchorage Municipality, AK

Sun, occasional clouds, and light wind with temperature in the high fifties as I started at 1pm and increasingly cloudy at 60° when I finished at 3:10pm. The forecast for today had looked cool and gray so when it was sunnier than expected I was glad for an opportunity to check for butterflies. There was a lot of activity today, especially in a narrow meadow with lots of wildflowers between Blueberry Knoll and Flattop Mountain. Recently-eclosed Milbert’s Tortoiseshells were everywhere, as were Mormon Fritillaries which have been active at this sight since the start of June. As we get late in the season, though, overall diversity of species has decreased substantially.
