Sunny with partial clouds, 62° and breezy. Alaskan butterfly survey data from July 1965 collected by Dr. Ken W. Philip indicates Dorcas Coppers were found on the campus of Alaska Pacific University. Our house is about midway between APU and Baxter Bog, a location in East Anchorage I’ve been monitoring closely where Dorcas Coppers are present (but not yet eclosed this season at my last visit). I checked satellite imagery and found a bog on the APU campus, and then biked over there this afternoon to have a look. There’s plenty of Shrubby Cinquefoil, host plant of Dorcas Coppers, so the bog looks very promising. I’ll keep checking on it along with Baxter Bog. I saw no indication of larval activity on the leaves of the Cinquefoil but couldn’t stick with it for too long due to mosquitos and irate gulls.
