Sunny with a light breeze at 54° from 3:10 to 5:50pm. Woods frogs could be heard calling throughout the bog, audible last weekend too but with greater volume today. A Wilson’s snipe winnowed over the bog, adding to the spring sounds. There was little butterfly activity until I had gone three-quarters of the way around the bog, when suddenly a little light blue butterfly passed by. I followed it for a couple of minutes as the butterfly weaved in and out among the trees beside the trail before I lost track. I managed a couple of blurred shots but no real documentation despite trying at length for another sighting. Still, since no other blue species is typically expected in May here and the very earliest historically reported sightings for other blues were late in the month, I’m going to go out on a limb and call it a Northern Spring Azure. Hopefully I’ll be able to back up additional sightings with some photos in the next week or two.
