Sighting for April 24, 2022

Brian McGurgan

Seward Highway M95.3 Pullout (60.93294° N, 149.32296° W)
Anchorage Municipality, AK

Observed during shore-based beluga monitoring and photo identification session from 11:20am to 2:20pm with bright sun, clear skies, and a light breeze; temperatures starting at 49° and rising to 54°. The Milbert’s Tortoiseshell was present throughout the session, sunning itself on rocks along the shore and occasionally fluttering up and along the pullout. It was skittish and usually landed in spots among the rocks close to the water that were difficult to approach. When it landed nearby I crawled down onto the rocks to get some photos. We had sightings of ten or eleven distant belugas in two small groups during the session as well.
