Sighting for July 31, 2013

Rob Santry

Prather Ranch at Ball Mountain Road, 6.5 miles SW of the town of Macdoel, CA
Siskiyou County, CA

For two years in a row I found a few Great Spangled Fritillaries along the road leading up to Ball Mountain. These sightings were in a forested area and I knew that Great Spangled Fritillaries are an obligate wet meadow cruiser, so I went looking for the meadow habitat that these frits were coming from. Sure enough the meadows at the base of the climb up to Ball mountain had plenty of thistle hostplant and 18+ Great Spangled frits. This is a great locale for this wonderful fritillary.
I also saw my first-of-season Woodland Skipper at the same locale…

  • Pine White 4
  • Acmon Blue 1
  • Great Spangled Fritillary 18
  • Zerene Fritillary 4
  • Lorquin's Admiral 4
  • Common Wood-Nymph 5
  • Common Branded Skipper 3
  • Sonoran Skipper 3
  • Woodland Skipper 1
